Introduction
When I set out to start Qissa Comics, I was eager to explore modern indie comics emerging from India. I was delighted to stumble upon "Eyes n' Daggers" by Unbearable Comics—a fascinating collaboration between three indie artists and college friends from India. This series immediately caught my attention with its unique blend of supernatural elements and Indian cultural motifs.
Here’s my detailed review of the first two chapters of "Eyes n' Daggers."
Synopsis
"Eyes n' Daggers" introduces us to the world of Raghav Ravi, a laidback Ghost Hunter, and Darshan, a timid young boy as they travel through realms of the supernatural and the divine.
Artwork & Visual Presentation
What works for this comic is the brilliant artwork, with amazing depictions of ghost transformations and Darshan's trauma. The creators showcase their exceptional artistic skills, and the character designs are memorable—Raghav’s distinct facial hair, which gives off a Wolverine-like vibe, contrasts well with Darshan’s innocent look. The use of colors effectively sets the mood, with dark, eerie neon tones for the supernatural scenes.
Verdict: 9/10
Writing & Storytelling
On whole Chapter 1 was an enjoyable fast-paced read. A good intro to the characters and the world of Ghost, Supernatural and Curses. I specially loved Raghav's pet Juju goofy characterization.
But the writer in me is always looking for more nuanced back story, like who set the curse and why. A bit a fight sequence could give insights to Raghav's strength and the kind of Ghosts he is up against. The story is built plainly and there were no twists or a wow moment where character did something smart, brave or unexpected.
My biggest disappointment was with Chapter 2, where the story didn’t really move forward. Knowing the effort and time it takes to complete an entire chapter, it was hard to see that. Plus, the cliff-hanger ending, with no Chapter 3 released even after another year, felt frustrating. I would have preferred a flashback showing why the ghosts targeted Darshan or something about Raghav that would help us connect with his bashful character.
Verdict: 7/10
Overall Impressions
What Worked:
Strong Art Style: The detailed artwork and vibrant color palette elevate the supernatural elements of the story.
Cultural Touchstones: Incorporating Indian mythology and folklore adds a unique flavor that sets this comic apart.
Engaging Introduction: Chapter 1 provides an enjoyable, fast-paced introduction to the world of ghosts and curses. It effectively sets the stage and introduces the main characters, giving readers a glimpse into their personalities.
What Didn’t Work:
Lack of Depth and Nuance: While Chapter 1 sets up the premise well, it lacks a nuanced backstory that could deepen the narrative adding more complexity would make the story more engaging.
Lack of Pace in Chapter 2: Despite the time and effort put into creating an entire chapter, it felt stagnant and didn't add new dimensions to the story or characters.
Lack of Memorable Moments: The straightforward storyline has few twists or standout moments.
Final Rating: 8/10 Conclusion
"Eyes n' Daggers" is a must-read for fans of supernatural thrillers with a unique cultural twist. We look forward to seeing the artists unite once again for Chapter 3, where we hope to delve deeper into the lives of Raghav and Darshan and uncover more about their intriguing world.
