Birth Of A New World

Introduction

Recently, I made a post on Reddit asking for links to Indie Comics that I could review (and learn from). The response was overwhelming, with many suggestions flooding in, making it tough to decide where to begin. After some deliberation, I chose to dive into a comic titled "Birth of a New World", which I managed to read while waiting for my flight.

At 85 pages, it’s quite a lengthy read for a single sitting, and the experience was further slowed down at times by GlobalComix, which occasionally took a while to load the pages.

That said, this review will focus on Act 1, the only section available for free at the moment.

Synopsis

Birth of a New World follows the story of two brothers, intriguingly named "Winner" and "Loser." True to his name, Winner rises to become the wealthiest person on Earth, eventually gaining control of the entire planet. However, Loser isn't exactly a failure—he possesses a unique gift that sets him apart. Now, he must assemble a team of fellow "superlosers" (or zuperheroes) to challenge Winner's reign and stop him before it's too late.

Artwork & Visual Presentation

The artwork is well-executed, with each character having a distinct look, making them stand out. The use of camera angles and panelling is thoughtful, particularly in dialogue-heavy scenes, where the simpler layouts make the conversations easy to follow. However, since there aren’t any action sequences in this act, there are no breath-taking or dynamic visuals on display. The colour palette is soft and easy on the eyes, though I did find the cover art a bit too dark and simplistic in its layout.

Verdict: 8/10

Writing & Storytelling

I really enjoyed the concept of someone becoming so rich that they end up owning Earth and turning it into Earth Inc., a global corporation. The decision to name the brothers "Winner" and "Loser" was clever and intriguing. The issue takes readers through their journey from childhood to adulthood, and the dialogue feels natural, closely resembling real-world conversations. The younger versions of Winner and Loser are particularly adorable, and their adventures with trick-or-treating, an old lady, and a policeman are lighthearted and engaging, keeping the narrative from dragging.

However, I didn’t enjoy the upfront reveal about the hide-and-seek game. It took away some of the suspense surrounding the letter and what would happen to the kids. I would have preferred a build-up of tension, with a more dramatic and unexpected letter reveal. Additionally, the play on their names—Winner and Loser—felt a bit overdone as the story progressed.

On a personal note, I don’t particularly enjoy major plot points emerging out of nowhere, without any prior foreshadowing or a strong explanation. The dream sequence and the wish-granting element felt a bit sudden and out of place, though I hope these concepts are explored more deeply in future issues.

Once the brothers part ways, the story does a great job of holding your interest, making you want to find out what happens next. The current state of Winner, along with the events that led him to this point, forms a compelling plot. A cliffhanger or an ending that previews the next chapters would have been a nice touch to build anticipation for what’s to come—something I actually saw on their Instagram page and appreciated.

Verdict: 8.5/10

Final Rating: 8/10

Conclusion

Chapter 1 of Birth of a New World sets a solid foundation for the story, leaving readers curious about what's to come next. I also happened to see few previews of upcoming chapter on Instagram which increased my interest. Overall it's an engaging and original concept, with well-defined characters and an intriguing storyline.
